About Working with an Independent Celebrant
What exactly is an independent celebrant?
An independent celebrant is a professional who creates and leads personalised ceremonies, including weddings, funerals/celebration of life services, namings, vow renewals and more, entirely around you.
Unlike registrars or religious officiants, I'm not bound by a set script or structure. Everything is written specifically for you, from scratch, with every word chosen to reflect what makes your story, your person or your moment genuinely unique.
How is a celebrant-led ceremony different from a registrar or church ceremony?
A registrar's ceremony must follow a legally prescribed format and is often limited in what can be personalised. A religious ceremony follows the traditions and requirements of the faith. A celebrant-led ceremony has no such constraints. You choose the readings, rituals, structure, tone and content.
If you’re unsure exactly what you’d like, I can help with suggestions for a range of different elements you can consider. The tone can be funny, deeply moving, traditional, unconventional, or all of these woven together. It's your ceremony, shaped entirely around you.
Why should I choose you as my celebrant?
I bring something a little different to this role. I'm a trained writer, a performer with a background in acting and musical theatre, and someone who has spent over 22 years working in the London events industry. I draw on all of these skills when crafting your ceremony with intention and deliver it in a way that captivates the room. I'll ask questions others don't think to ask, notice details that make your story unique and take deep pride and the time needed to get every word exactly right. My AMC wedding training and AOIC membership mean your ceremony is in experienced, professional hands.
Wedding Ceremonies
Is a celebrant wedding ceremony legally binding in England and Wales?
Not currently. Under existing law in England and Wales, a celebrant-led ceremony is not legally recognised in its own right. You'll need to register your marriage separately, usually a straightforward appointment at your local register office, either shortly before or after your ceremony. It's simpler than it sounds, and I'll walk you through exactly what's involved so there are no surprises.
In 2022, the Law Commission of England and Wales published recommendations to reform wedding law, with a government consultation expected to launch in 2026. The Give Couples Choice Movement website is a great resource for more information on this topic.
Can we include our own vows, readings or rituals?
Absolutely! This is something I actively encourage. Your ceremony can include personal vows you've written yourself (or that we work on together), readings chosen by you or your loved ones, symbolic rituals such as a unity candle, handfasting, ring warming or sand ceremony, and anything else that feels meaningfully yours. There are no rules here, we can be as creative as you like to shape what feels meaningfully yours.
How personal can the ceremony be?
Personalised in every way imaginable, not just 'insert names here' level customisation. Before I write a single word of your bespoke script, I'll spend time getting to know you both: how you met, what your relationship is built on, the moments that matter, the things that make you laugh, your future hopes and dreams. Your ceremony will sound unmistakably like a celebration of you two, not a template that could belong to anyone.
Where do you travel for weddings?
I'm based in Carshalton and regularly travel throughout Surrey, South London, Hampshire, Berkshire and West Sussex. I'm also very happy to travel further afield for the right ceremony.
How far in advance should we book?
Popular dates, particularly Saturdays between May and September, tend to book up quickly. I'd recommend reaching out as soon as you have a date and venue in mind, even if other details are still being decided. That said, I'll always try to accommodate shorter timescales where I can, so please don't hesitate to ask even if your date feels close.
Funeral & Celebration of Life Ceremonies
How soon can you be available for a funeral ceremony?
I understand that when you lose someone, time moves differently. I'm available to make contact as quickly as you need me to and I'll work entirely around your timeline and pace. There's no pressure, no fixed schedule I'll impose. Just reach out whenever you're ready and we'll go from there.
What's the difference between a funeral and a celebration of life?
A traditional funeral service tends to follow a more formal structure and is often held shortly after someone has passed. A celebration of life is typically less formal and may take place weeks or even months later, allowing more time for planning and for family members to travel. Both can be deeply personal and meaningful and the distinction is often one of tone and timing. I'm on hand to help you decide and together we’ll create whatever feels right for your loved one.
Do you work with funeral directors?
Yes. As a funeral celebrant in Surrey and South London, I work alongside funeral directors across these regions. If you're arranging a funeral through a director and would like me to lead the ceremony, you're very welcome to request me directly as families have every right to choose their own celebrant, regardless of who the funeral director is.
Can family members speak or contribute to the ceremony?
Of course. Many families want loved ones to share a memory, read a poem or speak a few personal words. I'll help anyone who'd like to contribute to feel comfortable and supported in doing so, including helping them find or write something if they're unsure where to start. The ceremony should hold space for everyone who wants to be part of it. On the day, if anyone giving a reading becomes too overcome emotionally to continue, I’ll be right there to step in and support them, should they wish.
Naming Ceremonies
Who is a naming ceremony for?
A naming ceremony is a beautiful way to formally welcome any child into your family and the lives of the people who love them, whether you're celebrating a newborn, an adopted child, a fostered child or a young person joining your family at any age. They're especially popular with non-religious, spiritual, agnostic or mixed-faith families who want a meaningful celebration that doesn't follow a religious tradition. That said, naming ceremonies are for everyone, the only requirement is love.
What does a naming ceremony include?
That's completely your choice and I’ll happily guide you through the different elements and options if you’re unsure where to start. A naming ceremony can include a welcome for your child, promises made by parents and chosen guardians or guide parents, readings or poems or songs. The naming itself is a joyful moment, and we can add any rituals or personal touches you'd like to incorporate. I'll work with you to create something that feels authentic and meaningful for your family, values and the people in the room.
The Process
What happens after I get in touch?
We'll start with a relaxed, no-obligation conversation by phone or video call so I can find out a little about you and what you're looking for. If we're a good fit (and I hope we will be!), we'll agree on the details and I'll send across a booking confirmation. From there, I'll guide you through everything at a pace that suits you, gathering the information I need to write your ceremony and keeping you involved at every step.
How many meetings or calls do we have?
As many as you need. I don't work to a rigid checklist of interactions. Some people like regular check-ins; others prefer to let me get on with things and review a draft when it's ready. I'll follow your lead and make sure you feel confident and supported throughout, however that looks for you.
Will we see the script before the ceremony?
Always. I'll share the script with you well in advance so you can read it, reflect on it and request any changes. Your ceremony should feel exactly right to you before the day arrives.
Do you offer bespoke poems?
Yes and it's something I particularly love doing. I can write an original poem for your ceremony: something that captures your story, honours your person or marks your milestone in words that belong entirely to you. Just let me know and we can talk about what you have in mind.
Fees & Availability
How much does a ceremony cost?
My fees vary depending on the type of ceremony, its complexity and travel involved. I believe every ceremony should be as individual as the people it's created for, which means I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all price list either. The best way to find out is to get in touch and I'll be happy to share my fees once I understand a little more about what you're looking for.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. To secure your date I ask for a deposit at the time of booking, with the balance due closer to the ceremony. Full details are set out clearly in my booking agreement so everything is transparent from the start.
What areas do you cover?
I'm based in Carshalton, Surrey, and cover Surrey, South London, Hampshire, Berkshire and West Sussex as standard. I'm very happy to travel beyond these areas, including further afield across the UK, for the right ceremony. Travel costs for longer distances are agreed in advance with no surprises.
